Based on the local climate and the decomposition of the body, it was estimated that the individual had died around 10-15 years prior, roughly between 1996 and 2001. This timeline coincided with my father, John Morrison's, disappearance in 1997.

The age of the deceased at the time of death was estimated to be between 30-40 years old, matching my father's age when he vanished.

With the body reduced to bones, fingerprints were of no use. However, modern forensic science had a powerful tool at its disposal: DNA analysis.

Back in 1985, when the family massacre occurred, the technology was rudimentary, and the police only managed to obtain the suspect's fingerprints.

(DNA was first introduced as evidence in the United States criminal court system in 1986.)

By 1997, when my father disappeared, the police confirmed he was responsible for the 1985 case through fingerprint matching.

So, while the police hadn't been able to collect my father's DNA, they did take a blood sample from me for their records.

In 2011, when the remains were found after more than a decade, DNA technology had matured significantly. The police extracted DNA from the bones for analysis and comparison, which revealed a paternal link to me.

After decades, technological advancements finally provided more conclusive evidence.

The remains at the base of the mountain were indeed those of my long-lost father. The police promptly informed me.

Years had passed, but I still remembered what my father wore the day he took me to my SATs—a striped sweatshirt. Now, tattered remnants of fabric entwined with the bones bore the same pattern.

With the suspect deceased, the case was closed without pursuing further criminal charges, turning a page on the dark legacy I had inherited.

I never shared this story with my wife, Sarah.
