Chapter 5: Confronting the Past

In the nick of time, Lily hit the mute button and pressed the phone to her ear, launching into a fake conversation to dodge being outed as the mystery advisor.

"Hey, Justin, long time no chat! Yeah, I'm hanging in there..."

While playing it cool, she kept an eye on Alex's reaction. He barely gave her a second look before heading to the bedroom.

Lily exhaled a sigh of relief as she noticed the call had dropped due to her delay in answering.

She then caught up on Alex's latest texts:

"Got a sec for a call? Found a quiet spot. Time for a chat?

"I spoke with my wife about her college senior, and she claims not to know who I'm talking about. I'm starting to think that I may have been wrong about her feelings for him."

Reading Alex's message, Lily couldn't help but feel a mix of relief and amusement. She had finally begun to unravel the tangled web of misunderstandings that had plagued their marriage.

"Seems she got a call from some guy named Justin. What's your take? She looked kinda funny. Think he's her old flame?"

His imagination was running wild. "Easy there. Sometimes you just gotta ask straight up.

"For all we know, her first teenage crush might've been Justin Bieber."

Alex sounded frustrated. "C'mon, no jokes, please."

But Lily wasn't kidding. If they were talking first loves, for her, it was Bieber all the way!

Intrigued by this idea, Lily added, "Have you ever considered that your wife's ideal type might be someone like Justin Bieber? His combination of talent, charm, and boyish good looks has captured the hearts of many women."

Alex, skeptical of the suggestion, furrowed his brow as he read Lily's message. The thought of his wife harboring a secret affection for a pop star seemed far-fetched, but he couldn't deny the possibility. Determined to uncover the truth, Alex replied, "I suppose it's worth investigating. How do you suggest I go about figuring out her ideal type?"

A mischievous grin spread across Lily's face as she crafted her response. "One way to gauge your wife's preferences is by imitating different types of men and observing her reactions. Try embodying various archetypes and see which one elicits the most positive response from her."

He was curious. "Oh? How so?"

Lily laid out a playful strategy. "Try on different personas and see how she reacts to each."

Lily proceeded to provide Alex with a list of male archetypes to explore:

1. The domineering CEO: Confident, assertive, and always in control.

2. The clingy puppy: Affectionate, needy, and constantly seeking attention.

3. The gentle loyal dog: Faithful, supportive, and always by her side.

As an afterthought, Lily added one more archetype to the list:

4. The silly and sweet type: Playful, endearing, and always ready with a joke or a smile.

Lily couldn't resist the temptation to see Alex's cute and goofy side, wondering how he would embody this particular persona.

"Just make sure to show her some love, no matter the costume."

"Really, me? Are you sure this won't backfire? I've always played it cool."

Lily reassured him, "When have I ever led you astray? Trust the process."

He paused, likely wrestling with his comfort zone.

Eventually, he caved. "Alright, I'm in. I trust you!"

As Alex pondered over the revelation that he had misunderstood Lily for two whole years, a wave of emotions washed over him. Regret, frustration, and a deep longing for the time they had lost. He couldn't believe that he had allowed his own insecurities and assumptions to cloud his judgment, causing him to keep Lily at arm's length when all he ever wanted was to hold her close.

But amidst the turmoil, one thing became crystal clear to Alex: Lily's happiness and well-being mattered more to him than his own pride or ego. He realized that he had been so focused on maintaining his image as the perfect substitute that he had forgotten to be the loving, attentive husband Lily deserved.

With a newfound sense of determination, Alex made a silent vow to himself. He would shed the mask of the cold, distant substitute and embrace his true self - the man who loved Lily with every fiber of his being. He would show her, through his words and actions, just how much she meant to him.

Taking a deep breath, Alex gazed at his reflection in the mirror. "You can do this," he whispered to himself. "Lily is worth every effort, every sacrifice. Show her the real you, the man she fell in love with. Be the husband she needs, the partner she can always count on."

With a final nod of encouragement to himself, Alex stepped out of the room, ready to embark on a new chapter in their marriage. He knew that the road ahead might be filled with challenges and uncertainties, but he was willing to face them all, hand in hand with Lily.

As he made his way downstairs, Alex's mind raced with ideas on how to show Lily his love and devotion. He would start by being more expressive, more affectionate. He would surprise her with little gestures of love, like cooking her favorite meals or planning spontaneous date nights.

And most importantly, he would listen to her, really listen. He would create a safe space for Lily to share her thoughts, her dreams, and her fears, without fear of judgment or rejection. He would be her rock, her confidant, her best friend.

With each step, Alex felt a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. He couldn't wait to see the look on Lily's face when she realized that the man she had always wanted, the man she had always needed, had been right beside her all along.

As he rounded the corner and caught sight of Lily, a warm smile spread across his face. This was the beginning of a new era in their love story, one filled with honesty, trust, and unwavering devotion. And Alex was ready to write every chapter with the woman of his dreams by his side.
