Toneri returned to Konoha just as the Hyūga clan was preparing for their annual family competition. Strong emotions arose within him at seeing the clan that would one day produce his beloved Hinata. Seized by a sudden ambition, Toneri decided to enter the competition himself and bring the Hyūga under his influence.
As an outsider, his participation caused quite a stir. But Toneri's prowess with the Gentle Fist style could not be denied. In the first round matches, he effortlessly defeated a succession of Hyūga opponents less than half his age. Each victory carried him closer to claiming leadership over the hardened clan.
Toneri found irony in using the Hyūga's own skills against them. The Gentle Fist form he now wielded so adroitly would one day flow from Hinata's hands to defend their future children. To pave the way for that distant dream, he resolutely continued advancing through the tournament brackets.
The early trials were but a taste of the true tests still to come. The elders no doubtsaving their best for the final rounds. But Toneri remained patient and determined, never losing sight of his goal to one day see the clan bow before their fated princess - his precious Hinata.
Toneri effortlessly weaved between the attacks of his latest Hyūga opponent, almost yawning at the simplicity of it. Each match so far in the family competition had been pathetically predictable. These clan members may excel at their prized Gentle Fist style, but they moved like novices to one so well versed in the fundamentals.
With a quick parry and surgical palm strike, Toneri sent his stumbling challenger to his knees. The match was called and he was declared victor yet again. Raucous cheers erupted from the cadet house members crowded along the hall’s periphery. But from the main branch observers seated prominently to the fore, only cold and wary silence answered his compounding victories.
As the elimination rounds continued, it became increasingly clear this upstart “outsider” would be crowned champion. Never in living memory had anyone beyond the upper echelons even progressed to the final tiers. Yet here was Toneri effortlessly dismantling fellow branch members and lesser main house cousins alike as if they were still academy students.
Each win swelled his support base while diminishing the sway of hidebound traditionalists clinging desperately to fraying notions of innate prestige tied to lineage. With his flawless showing thus far, Toneri was fast becoming the de facto champion of those hungry for upsetting the status quo.
And Toneri had to admit even he was surprised at how readily he seemed to inspire this building movement. He gave voice to simmering frustrations the oppressed ranks harbored but were too wary to openly express. By offering himself as the champion to shake up the rigid caste system, subordinates flocked to Toneri’s banner. He became the face of the reformist wave now rapidly gaining momentum.
In truth, he cared little for these joiners beyond what advantage allying with them brought him in his patient quest to one day claim Hyūga’s fated heiress for his own. But for now he must wear the mantle of revolutionary icon if he hoped to forge this reactionary clan into a form better suited to welcoming Hinata in the coming years.
So he masterfully played the populist hero - proudly wearing common branch member garb while offering inspiring calls for “a clan united in purpose rather than divided by misguided notions of prestige." His compatriots roared approval and shared their own grievances. To them he was a savior, a catalyst for righting generations of perceived wrongs. Each voice bolstered his growing legend.
And with his celebrity came growing notoriety. The elders held more closed door meetings to address the “Toneri situation” while issuing ever harsher decrees to check his influence. But the wave was already swelling past what their declining authority could hope to stem.
After Toneri claimed victory in the final competitor bout, roaring applause erupted from the impressed audience. None could deny his skill nor question his present standing within a clan in flux. He had proven his dominance at every turn. But now came the true test - to parlay his tournament success into a direct public challenge for leadership. The time was ripe to make his bold gambit...
"My friends! Our family stands at a crossroads!” Toneri’s voice boomed across the Great Hall, amplified by carefully woven chakra. “The old guard has failed you by cleaving to ways that promote stagnation and waste talent! I put myself forward as an agent of change - one who shall pull this clan from the mire of past constraints and set our people back on the path towards reclaiming our former glory!"
More riotous cheers erupted, now even drawing allies seeded discreetly among the main house ranks. Momentum was firmly on Toneri's side.
"Too long have we labored thanklessly to prop up a top heavy hierarchy bloated through excess and complacency. I say enough! Let those who ride on our backs seeking to limit your potential now face a champion who shall rebalance the scales!"
Adeaful silence settled as anticipation peaked. All eyes turned towards the elderly contingent seated sternly atop the dais. As expected, old Hideki slowly rose to his feet, livid anger purpling his wrinkled face.
"This farce ends now, whelp! Our noble laws decree none may stand as clan head who did not first rise within the main house, much less some barely documented outsider!” Venom dripped from each word. “No matter the discontent you stir within our lessers, the old covenants still stand!"
A chorus of boos and angry shouts answered, forcing Hideki to shout even louder to regain control. "As head elder, I am empowered to select our current leader's champion. And I choose Neji of the cadet branch to remind you of the folly of opposing your betters!"
Stunned silence gripped the hall at the unprecedented appointment. A youth not even of age selected as surrogate champion? Now was the moment of highest tension. If Toneri backed down in the face of this technicality, the fervor he had stoked would immediately dissipate. He had to act decisively or lose this narrow window. Steeling himself and praying his next words would not trigger outright revolt, Toneri shouted his fateful challenge:
"Elder Hideki, I call for trial by combat to settle this leadership dispute once and for all! By my undisputed performance in this tournament, I claim the role of claimant fully sanctioned by our most ancient rites! Therefore as reigning victor this day, I boldly challenge Lord Hiashi himself for stewardship over the Hyūga clan!"
For long terrible seconds no one moved or dared even breath. Never in living memory had Lord Hiashi or any clan head faced direct challenge. To circumvent established selection conventions guaranteeing continuity of power spoke of civil war.
Yet Hideki had also invoked seldom used emergency powers with his blatant attempt to suppress insurrection by naming a cadet child as surrogate. In this he paved the way for Toneri’s own radical provocation. And judging by the sea of shocked but rapt faces, none dared intervene with reactionary justice.
Finally Hiashi himself stood, robes flowing majestically around his stoic form. Stern disapproval chilled the air as he stared down at this brazen usurper. When at last he spoke, his words held calmly measured menace:
"Very well pretender. In accordance with our oldest laws, I accept your impudent challenge. We shall settle this affair by first blood or surrender. And once you lie broken and bleeding at my feet, none shall ever dare question our lawful hierarchy again!"
Murmurs spread through the crowd like cracking ice at the decree. None expected Hiashi to directly engage the challenger’s futile grasping at power. That he acquiesced spoke to the seriousness of this rebellion brewing under their very noses.
As Hiashi descended to stand opposite his pale-eyed adversary, Toneri spared the elder a mirthless smile. The gauntlet was thrown and chaos now loomed. But through the coming storm, his own ascendancy would be guaranteed...
