My entire existence, every choice I thought was mine, was scripted within the intricate tapestry of a VR visual novel game. The notes left near the fridge, which I once believed to be ominous premonitions or cruel jokes, were, in fact, potential branching paths conceived by the game's author.

The revelation was staggering, but nothing prepared me for the moment I came face-to-face with the creator of my world. The author's visage mirrored that of Jo, the character I had cherished and whose presumed fate had driven me to the brink of vengeance. The irony was not lost on me; the person I sought to confront for scripting my tragedies was the very embodiment of my deepest affections.

The author, too, was ensnared within the digital confines they had crafted, a prisoner of their own creation. Regret painted their features as they confessed how their role had evolved from omnipotent narrator to reluctant participant. Their intention had never been to weave a narrative of despair, yet as they became entangled in the game's reality, the lines between creator and creation blurred, leading to unforeseen sorrow.

Our conversations, initially charged with my accusations and her defensiveness, gradually gave way to a mutual understanding.

Me

: "Why did you create a world filled with so much sadness?"

Author

: "I didn't mean to. It started as a story, but it became too real. Seeing a character that looks like me made me feel awkward, so I thought of giving you a new love interest."

Me

: "Can we make it right again? Sorry to use your own image anymore. It's not fair to you. This time, I'll just have a secret crush on Jo and watch over her quietly."

Author

: "Thanks. Yes, we can reset. But this time, we'll write a happier story."

Me

: "What about Jo? I can't let her suffer again."

Author

: "We'll keep her safe. She'll be a secret, known only to us."

Me

: "A secret character? How will that work?"

Author

: "She'll be there, in the background. You'll be her guardian."

Me

: "And the players? They won't know about Jo?"

Author

: "No, they won't. She'll be our little secret, protected from the game's sorrows."

Me

: "Will I remember everything when the game resets?"

Author

: "You might not, but your role is to secretly love Jo and protect her."

Me

: "I promise to watch over her, always."

Author

: "And I'll ensure the game brings joy, not tears."

Me

: "Here's to new beginnings."

This new version of the game became a sanctuary of happiness and mystery, where players embarked on adventures unaware of the silent guardian watching over them. The sorrow that once plagued our digital realm was replaced with laughter and light-hearted quests, making the VR experience a source of comfort and delight.

This Jo was untethered from the scripted fates that had once bound her. To the player, she would be a mystery, a shadow woven through the storyline, her true significance known only to those who had glimpsed behind the curtain of the game's reality.

As for me, my existence within the game transformed. Freed from the chains of the author's original plot, I navigated this new world with a sense of agency I had never known. The specter of predetermined sorrow lifted, I embarked on adventures that were mine to choose, encounters that sparkled with the genuine unpredictability of life.
