"Today you will be unemployed."
No matter how hard I tried to impress at work, I was let go by my boss in the afternoon, the reason being a mistake I made a year ago.
"Today, you'll escape a fire, but your eyebrows will be singed off."
I spent the day away from home, lounging in a park. On my bus ride back in the evening, a fire broke out onboard. We all scrambled to escape through the windows, thankfully without any injuries, but my eyebrows were indeed gone.
Can you imagine how I felt?
It was as if I was gambling with an invisible force, always placing bets only to lose every time. No matter my resistance, it felt futile.
I even began to wonder if someone, in a dimension unknown to me, was puppeteering my life, and if so, I despised them deeply.
"Today, you will kill your girlfriend."
My fists clenched, trembling with rage and disbelief in front of the fridge.
"This isn't me; this isn't my life!"
"Damn fate, I would never harm Jo!"
She was still asleep in the room, my nails digging into my palms, the pain failing to calm my turmoil.
I destroyed the note, stamping on it vehemently.
"This will never happen!"
Gritting my teeth, I returned to the bedroom.
"We need to break up," I said emotionlessly, cigarette in hand, standing before Jo.
She seemed barely awake, rubbing her eyes, then chuckled, "What are you on about?"
"I'm serious."
After a tense three minutes, her eyes reddened, "Why?"
"I've fallen for someone else."
Tears fell as she murmured, "I don't believe you."
"We've been intimate."
"You're lying."
"I've been sick of pretending, can't you see? I've been forcing a smile all this time."
Jo wiped her tears and embraced me, "I know you've been off lately, and it's okay if you're struggling to find work. I have some savings; we can get by. I believe in you."
My heart ached. If I could, I'd rather be the one facing death today, given the ominous note. But I hardened my heart, determined to alter this cruel fate.
