"Today, you were robbed."
Trembling, I picked up the note, struggling to breathe. No one had visited since yesterday; who could have left this note?
Or perhaps, it wasn't a person at all...
I reached for my phone, intending to call the cops, but then thought better of it. They might think I'm crazy. My mind raced, and I quickly called my boss, feigning illness with Oscar-worthy acting, and snagged a day off.
If I stayed in, the robbery could be avoided, right? Genius move.
I crumpled the note and tossed it in the trash, locking the door and windows tight before connecting my game console and loosening up my wrists.
Might as well enjoy some gaming today.
At half-past noon, the doorbell rang unexpectedly.
Peering through the peephole, I saw a delivery guy with a simple, honest face, saying loudly, "Your order's here!"
"Just leave it at the door; I'll get it in a bit."
Thinking of the ominous note, I was determined to minimize any risk.
The delivery guy left the package at the door before heading back to the elevator. I waited another five minutes, feeling the hallway's silence, and relaxed my tense nerves. As I bent to pick up the order, I was suddenly grabbed from behind, the assailant's grip so tight I could barely breathe.
"Don't move, or you're done for."
I felt the cold blade of a knife against my chest. The elevator dinged, and the delivery guy reappeared, entering my apartment with the thug. After shutting the door, he slapped me, "Hate snobs like you."
How did I ever think this guy looked harmless?
My hands and feet were bound, and I lay on the floor like a discarded rag while they ransacked my place.
I suddenly felt a reckless urge to test a theory.
Clearly, the note was a harbinger of fate, destined to happen no matter what.
Without a doubt.
But was the robbery the most significant event of my day?
The note only mentioned a robbery, not "You will be robbed and then bleed to death." So, could it mean I wasn't going to die today no matter what?
Proving this would require immense courage.
Taking a deep breath, I yelled at the robbers, "Go ahead, kill me if you dare! I've seen your faces. I'll have you locked up if you let me go."
The burly thug and the delivery guy exchanged glances, and then, with a menacing look, the thug approached me with his knife.
Step... step... step...
His footsteps echoed in the empty room as I clenched my teeth, meeting his gaze head-on.
