Chapter 10: The Price of Power
As Selena's reign of terror continued, I couldn't help but notice the toll it was taking on her. She looked haggard and worn, her once-perfect features now marred by deep lines of stress and exhaustion.
And it wasn't just her physical appearance that had suffered. Selena's magic, once a powerful force to be reckoned with, now seemed to be fading with each passing day.
I overheard her arguing with her Mentor Mascot one evening, her voice shrill and desperate.
"I don't understand!" she cried, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. "I've been absorbing negative energy from everyone I can find, but it's not enough! Why am I still losing power?"
The Mascot's voice was cold and unfeeling as it replied. "It's simple, Selena. The energy you're absorbing from your classmates is too weak, too diluted. It's like trying to fill a bucket with a leaky faucet. No matter how much you take, it will never be enough."
Selena let out a growl of frustration, her eyes flashing with anger and despair. "But what am I supposed to do? I can't just stop using magic altogether!"
The Mascot chuckled, a low, metallic sound that sent shivers down my spine. "I'm afraid you don't have a choice, Selena. Your energy points have dropped to a mere 50. If they fall below zero, you will start to lose your own attributes. Your appearance, your intelligence, even your very life force will begin to fade away."
I felt a rush of horror at the Mascot's words. I had always known that Selena's magic came at a price, but I had never realized just how steep that price could be.
Selena must have sensed my presence, because she whirled around to face me, her eyes wild with desperation.
"You!" she cried, her voice cracking with emotion. "This is all your fault! If you would just stop laughing, stop being so damn happy all the time, I wouldn't be in this mess!"
I felt a rush of anger at Selena's words. How dare she try to blame me for her own choices, her own actions?
"I'm sorry, Selena," I said, my voice cold and unfeeling. "But I won't apologize for being happy. And I won't let you drag me down with you."
Selena's face twisted with rage and despair, and for a moment, I thought she might actually attack me. But instead, she turned her anger on the Mascot, screaming and cursing at it with a fury that I had never seen before.
"You useless piece of junk!" she cried, her voice raw with emotion. "You promised me power, but all you've given me is misery and pain!"
The Mascot remained impassive in the face of Selena's tirade, its glowing eyes fixed on her with an almost pitying expression.
"I warned you, Selena," it said, its voice soft and almost kind. "I told you that the path of a magical girl was not an easy one. But you chose to ignore my warnings, to let your own greed and ambition consume you. And now, you must face the consequences of your actions."
I watched as Selena crumpled to the ground, her body wracked with sobs of despair and self-loathing. And in that moment, I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
But I knew that I couldn't let myself be drawn into her web of darkness and despair. I had worked too hard, come too far, to let her drag me down with her.
And so, I made a decision. I would leave Weston University, at least for a little while. I would find a place off-campus, somewhere far away from Selena and her toxic influence.
I knew that it wouldn't be easy, that I would be leaving behind everything I had worked so hard to build. But I also knew that it was the only way to protect myself, to keep my own light shining bright in the face of Selena's darkness.
And so, with a heavy heart and a determined spirit, I packed my bags and said goodbye to the place that had been my home for the past three years.
As I walked out of my dorm room for the last time, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and loss. But I also felt a sense of hope, a sense that I was moving towards something better, something brighter.
And as I stepped out into the sunshine, my face lifted towards the sky, I knew that I had made the right choice.
I was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, armed with the power of my own convictions and the strength of my own spirit.
And no matter what the future might hold, I knew that I would never let anyone, not even Selena Darkwood, dim the light that shone within me.
