Chapter 1: A Magical Revelation

I'm quite timid and prone to self-doubt. I'm often found lingering in corners, unsure and reluctant to start conversations. When someone does approach me, I find myself overthinking every word I say. Dealing with my roommate, Selena Darkwood, is a constant challenge as she repeatedly crosses my boundaries—whether by borrowing my belongings without permission or playing loud music late into the night. Though I feel frustrated, I struggle to assert myself, fearing it may escalate into conflict or portray me as overly sensitive. However, in the larger context, these concerns seem trivial.

I sat on my bed, staring at my latest quantum physics exam results, my vision blurred by the tears welling up in my eyes. Another failing grade, despite the countless hours I had spent studying in the library. My long, dark hair fell over my face as I hung my head, feeling utterly defeated.

"Aurora Sterling, how many credits did you score this time? Don't tell me you bombed again," Selena Darkwood asked in a mocking tone as she flipped her perfectly curled blonde hair over her shoulder.

I couldn't bring myself to respond. Ever since starting college at Weston University, I had struggled academically. I had few friends and spent most of my time buried in textbooks, trying to understand the complex concepts that seemed to come so easily to my classmates.

At first, my peers had called me the "Library Queen," but as my grades continued to plummet, I became the laughingstock of the class. Behind my back, they whispered cruel jibes like "Wannabe genius, more like a dumbass." I felt utterly lost and devastated.

Selena sauntered over to check my score, her designer clothing hugging her perfect figure. She glanced at the paper and let out a harsh laugh.

"Seriously? You study, like, 24/7, and you still failed every subject?! I barely cracked a book, and I aced it. Maybe the profs just like me better," she gloated, her blue eyes gleaming with malicious glee.

I felt like I had hit rock bottom. I thought to myself, "I've tried so hard, but I still can't keep up. What's the point? I might as well just end it all."

As soon as this dark thought crossed my mind, a strange voice suddenly filled the room.

"Aurora Sterling's emotional state has reached an all-time low. Selena Darkwood is awarded 100 energy points."

I froze, glancing around the room in confusion. I couldn't see the source of the voice.

Moments later, I heard Selena's voice, but her lips weren't moving.

"Holy shit, that's a ton of points! I'm gonna cash them in for a beauty boost. Time to up my Insta game!"

I was floored. The laughter I heard was unmistakably familiar - it was Selena Darkwood's. But how could that be? Selena wasn't even opening her mouth, yet her voice and that strange sound continued.

As I listened intently, I began to make out the conversation between Selena and a mysterious, dark figure she called her "Mentor Mascot." Selena had bonded with a Magical Companion, floating in the air, a small, black, cat-like creature with unsettling glowing green eyes. By incessantly belittling others and deriving sustenance from their negative emotions, Selena could accumulate energy points.

"Selena, your performance as a Magical Girl has been lackluster at best," the Mascot's voice was cold and condescending. "Apart from this occasion, you've scarcely accumulated any energy points this week."

Selena's voice was strained, "But I've been trying my best! It's not my fault that Aurora is so resilient. Her energy is incredibly potent, but it's hard to keep her down for long."

The Mascot scoffed, "Excuses, excuses. You should be grateful that I even chose you as a Magical Girl. If it weren't for Aurora's immense energy potential, but alas, she lacks the potential to become a magical girl. I wouldn't have bothered with a subpar candidate like you."

"I know, I know," Selena sounded defeated. "But what more can I do? I've been belittling her, mocking her, and using every trick in the book to make her feel miserable."

"That's the problem with you humans," the Mascot sneered. "You lack creativity. Have you been utilizing the energy items I've provided? The exam score swapper, for instance?"

Selena perked up, "Oh, yes! That one's been a lifesaver. No matter how well Aurora does on her exams, I can swap our scores and make her believe she failed."

The Mascot's tone was menacing, "Just remember, Selena. If you fail to meet your energy quotas, there will be consequences. I have no use for a Mahou Shoujo who can't deliver."

"I understand," Selena's voice trembled slightly. "I won't let you down."

As their conversation ended, I was left reeling. Selena had been using magical items to sabotage my academic performance and keep me in a state of constant misery, all to feed off my negative energy.

As I processed this revelation, I couldn't help but wonder why Selena had targeted me so relentlessly. We had no prior grudges or conflicts, yet she seemed to take great pleasure in tormenting me and sabotaging my academic success.

But I had an epiphany. If I could stay positive and happy, Selena would struggle to replenish her energy points. Without enough energy, she wouldn't be able to use those items against me anymore.

At that moment, I made a decision. I would no longer bottle up my emotions. Instead, I would express them openly and embrace a more sunny and cheerful outlook on life. If Selena wanted to play this game, I'd beat her at it by becoming the happiest version of myself.
