Cambridge and Oxford

"Looks like a future leader might emerge from you two event organizers," my colleague joked.
As we stood by the water cooler, Tom, ever so subtly, hinted at his leadership aspirations, saying, "Oxford has a legacy of leadership. Cambridge? I suppose it's a good place to learn about those leaders." I couldn't let that pass. With a smirk, I replied, "Well, Tom, Leadership is earned, not inherited from a university's legacy. Perhaps at Oxford, you're taught to lead sheep, but at Cambridge, we inspire lions."
I was determined not to let this Oxford alum Tom outshine me. So when we were both selected to plan the sustainability fundraiser gala with the theme “Sustainability Under the Stars", I immediately took charge of key elements.
“You handle venue decor and food—I’ll spearhead the important parts,” I directed.
Unsurprisingly, we never stopped arguing.
“These cheap decorations will embarrass us!” Tom complained.
“We’re highlighting eco-values, not showing off for tycoons!” I retorted.
We sparred over every detail, vetoing each other’s proposals entirely. Poor Simon watched in horror as we created a chaotic mess by event night. Guests were equally dismayed, not a penny in the donation box.
Just then, an unlikely hero emerged—Tom stepped up to give a speech...
He described having zero environmental awareness at Oxford initially. He was just a student journalist covering campus news.
That changed when he interviewed that year’s Goldman Environmental Prize winner—a Bangladeshi activist who led her village to resist destructive developers for ten years despite oppression and violence.
Tom choked up recounting how he realized individual power was limited—but collectively, the ordinary citizens, philanthropists, experts and leaders backing her provided immense strength.
Their stories from around the world kept inspiring more advocates.
Tom’s heartfelt words resonated deeply with me. I also felt ashamed realizing happenstance, not lofty ideals, brought me here.
But Tom’s transformation inspired the crowd too. We recognized everyone contributing in small ways can make a difference. The gala proceeded successfully afterwards, raising charity funds.
As the event wound down, I approached Tom with a smile. “I may have underestimated you. You were the real hero tonight!”
