Angelic voices soared exultantly as Tom slipped a gleaming signet ring onto my finger, eyes alight with wonder at this blessed moment. Just yesterday such bliss seemed unfathomable.
Yet fate’s mysterious rapprochement orchestrated heart-rending revelations under Oxford’s steepled spires, sweeping away painful missteps with liberating truth. Eventually choristers’ melodies faded, leaving us gloriously alone at last.
“I scarcely dare believe you truly mine after so long yearning,” marveled Tom, caressing my hand between his tenderly. “This surpasses all my loftiest Oxford debate championship goals!”
I smiled teasingly. “Well, for once your honeyed words swayed me against rational assessments!” Then sincerely, “Speaking from the heart at last certainly helped.”
Tom’s grin turned impish. “Perhaps Cambridge rigidity simply requires complementing by our more creatively romantic Oxford perspectives?”
I swatted him playfully, laughter dispelling the last hesitations between us. Lingering campus bells chimed the hour - already sunset! Reluctantly we ambled towards our lodgings for the final celebratory banquet. Yet I paused halfway across an arched granite bridge, flame-hued vistas captivating me.
Tom leaned alongside contentedly. “Penny for your thoughts, my fair lady?”
I smiled wistfully, the day’s astonishments flooding my mind. “Just overwhelmed realizing we almost missed this because of childhood hang-ups! Mature conversations clearly remained an underdeveloped skill back then...”
Tom squeezed my hand repentantly. “You mean my absurdly oversized ego and inability to confess weakness?” Chuckling self-deprecatingly, he reflected, “I fancied myself this impressive stoic persona when really I was just a silly boy afraid of rejection who handled things poorly.”
His humility made me fall for him even deeper. “We both made mistakes - me wallowing in assumptions instead of seeking truth.” I caressed Tom’s cheek tenderly. “Thank goodness philosophy refined wisdom prevailed eventually!”
Heart full, I lifted Tom’s palm to my lips reverently. “But the past brought us here now, yes? Perhaps it unfolded precisely as destiny deemed necessary for this breathtaking moment!”
The last fiery rays crowned Tom’s smiling visage in radiance worthy of angelicOxford patron saints as invoking poetry of old. “Verily, 'twas sustained affection conquering all,” proclaimed my formerly fractured knight, gazing skywards.
“It seems we’ve lived a real-life fairy tale spoof!” I leaned into Tom contentedly.
He replied thoughtfully, “I prefer imagining everything as prologue leading hero and heroine to fulfilling denouement.”
I furrowed confused brows. Tom explained gently, “Our quarrelling childhood was but prelude to ultimately uniting as allies. Each misunderstanding a plot twist predestined to teach greater wisdom revealed when time deemed auspicious.”
“Oh Tom! Ever the literary romantic tragedian!” I teased lovingly. “We’re hardly Shakespearean figures navigating epic tribulation prior some divinely-timed reconciliation!”
Tom twirled me theatrically, eyes sparkling. “And yet beloved, did extraordinary drama not grace our tale spanning years, misfortunes, and miraculous fortune now blessing us under heaven’s smile?”
As stars awakened in gathering dusk, we stood enfolded tenderly, souls seamlessly entwining like galaxy arms pooling ageless starstuff. Two once fractious hearts fused anew now serenely aglow in destiny’s grace.
Tom smiled peacefully. “What matters most is from now on we walk life’s path together, our love lighting the way and sustaining every step henceforth come what may...”
I embraced my one-time nemesis now beloved partner, spirits soaring like crimsoned phoenixes reborn from ashes of adversity into indomitable unity taking hopeful wing into whatever awaited beyond happily ever after just begun. The enduring decision to turn past pain into compassion and possibility had launched the next luminous chapter no longer divided but made infinitely stronger woven as one.
