Chapter 19: The Shattering of a Kingdom
With a heavy heart, Azrael set out to confront the Fire King, determined to talk some sense into the monarch before it was too late. As he made his way through the winding halls of the palace, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled over him, a sense that something terrible was about to unfold.
And then, as he rounded a corner and stepped into the throne room, he saw it - the Fire King, his face contorted in agony, his body wreathed in flames that danced and writhed with a fierce, uncontrollable intensity. Above his head, the Phoenix Scepter hovered ominously, its once-gentle glow now a searing, blinding light that seemed to consume everything it touched.
Azrael's eyes widened in horror, his mind reeling with the realization of what had happened. The Fire King, in his desperate bid for power, had attempted to use the Phoenix Scepter to enhance his own magical abilities, just as Azrael had done. But something had gone terribly wrong, and now the artifact was spiraling out of control, its power threatening to tear the very fabric of reality itself apart.
"Your Majesty!" Azrael shouted, his voice raw with desperation. "Please, you must stop this! If you continue down this path, it will lead to a catastrophe beyond imagining!"
But the Fire King merely shook his head, his eyes filled with a wild, desperate light. "It's too late," he muttered, his voice barely audible over the roar of the flames. "I've gone too far, pushed the boundaries of what is possible. There's no turning back now."
And then, with a final, anguished cry, the Fire King surrendered himself to the power of the Phoenix Scepter, his body consumed by the raging inferno that had once been his greatest treasure. The flames expanded rapidly, engulfing the throne room in a searing, blinding light that seemed to swallow everything it touched.
Azrael could only watch in horror as the Fire King, using the last of his strength, propelled himself towards the sky, desperate to get away from the Fire Kingdom before the inevitable explosion. But even as he flew, the power of the Phoenix Scepter continued to build, its energy reaching a critical mass that could no longer be contained.
In the next moment, the Phoenix Scepter suddenly spiraled out of control, and the flames rapidly expanded. The Fire King, using the last of his strength, flew towards the distance, hoping to get away from the Fire Kingdom. However, just as he was halfway through his flight, a devastating explosion swept across the entire kingdom.
And then, with a deafening roar that shook the very foundations of the earth, unleashing a devastating blast that swept across the entire kingdom. The earth trembled and heaved, buildings crumbling to dust in the face of the unimaginable force. Countless citizens were reduced to charred remains, their screams echoing endlessly through the smoke-filled air.
Amidst the chaos and destruction, Azrael caught sight of the werewolf girl, her eyes wide with terror as she watched the mushroom cloud rise into the sky. Unable to suppress her bestial nature any longer, she let out an anguished cry and transformed into a white wolf, fleeing into the wilderness in a frenzy of fear and desperation.
Azrael, his heart heavy with grief and despair, flew to the Fire King's side, his mind racing with the horror of what had just transpired. To his shock, he found the monarch still clinging to life, his armor shattered and his body broken, but his spirit unbroken.
"Azrael," the Fire King whispered, his voice weak and faltering. "My time is running out. Please, take care of Alice and her brother. Keep them safe, and guide them through the dark times ahead. This is my final request."
Azrael could only nod, tears streaming down his face as he watched the life fade from the Fire King's eyes. He had never imagined that it would come to this, that the man he had once regarded as a second father could be responsible for such unimaginable devastation.
Outside the Mind-reading Crystal, the gathered mages and warriors could only stare in stunned disbelief, their minds reeling with the realization of what had just transpired. Azrael, the man they had once regarded as the Abyssal Mage Emperor, the scourge of the realm, had been wrongfully accused once again. The true culprit, the one responsible for the deaths of countless innocent lives, was none other than the Fire King himself.
This once-wise ruler had ultimately brought about a great calamity due to a moment of greed. Everyone's gaze collectively fell upon the Empress of Flames, Alice.
They saw the anguish and despair etched upon her face, the tears streaming down her cheeks as she grappled with the horrifying truth. Her father, the man she had always regarded as the epitome of wisdom and virtue, had brought about a calamity beyond imagining, all in the pursuit of his own selfish desires.
Alice trembled uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face. She had never imagined that the catastrophic disaster was caused by her most revered father. She, the mighty Empress of Flames, was the daughter of a sinner...
"I don't understand," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "How could he do this? "
Miles away, Wind Saint and High Priestess Wendys, who had witnessed the truth through the Mind-reading Crystal, smiled at each other. They had always believed that their master could never commit such an inhumane atrocity. Now, it seemed that the biggest joke was on the Empress of Flames herself...
On his deathbed, the Fire King tightly grasped Azrael's hand, pleading with him to take care of Alice and her brother. Just then, Alice arrived and discovered the bodies of Azrael and her father.
"Master Azrael, what happened?! Father, he..." Alice choked out.
Azrael initially wanted to reveal the truth, but seeing the growing number of people coming to seek answers, he made a shocking decision.
He declared loudly, "I did all of this! I forcibly used the sacred artifact to break through my bottleneck! I never thought it would lead to the death of His Majesty, who came to stop me..."
Alice's eyes widened in disbelief. "Why... why did you do this?! Father treated you like his own son, gave you everything..."
Faced with the iron-clad "evidence," Alice sank into the abyss of despair. It was she who had brought this demon into the royal city, and now, she would have to end it with her own hands...
Little did Alice know that Azrael's heart was weeping at that moment. He understood that if he revealed the truth, Alice would be despised by the people as the daughter of a sinner, losing everything and even risking her life.
The most important thing is, Azrael vaguely feels himself to blame. If it weren't for the Fire King discovering that Azrael could enhance his power using the Phoenix Scepter, perhaps he wouldn't have embarked on this path of destruction.
The Fire King had given Azrael everything he now possessed, and today, Azrael decided to repay that debt with his own reputation and life, to protect the future of Alice and her brother...
