In the pitch darkness of night, devoid of stars or moon, the only source of light emanated from a massive amusement park ahead. The park, alive with flickering lights and shadows, seemed bustling with excitement. However, its entrance and sign were eerily unsettling.
The iron gates, corroded and rust-streaked, were entwined with strings of intermittently flickering bulbs. To the right stood a large, smiling mascot, reminiscent of Disney's Minnie Mouse, complete with a pink bow, though one of its eyelashes was unnervingly long.
The light from a ground-up spotlight cast an uninviting glow on the mascot's face, its smile more sinister than welcoming.
Its hands were positioned oddly - one with a finger raised, the other open wide.
The sign, tattered and swinging in the breeze, hung in the bottom left corner, bearing three words: "Paradise Lost."
I scrutinized the mascot for a while, sensing something off about it.
Suddenly, someone tapped my shoulder from behind. "Not going in?" I turned to see a sporty girl, who raised an eyebrow in question.
She seemed surprised, saying, "Hello. Let me introduce myself, Breeze. '"
I responded, "Jack Harper."
We passed the ominous sign and gates, stepping into the brightly lit amusement park.
Contrary to the entrance's dilapidation, the park's interior was surprisingly pristine.
The wide, straight roads were devoid of any litter, and the rides - the carousel, surfboard simulator, bumper cars, pirate ship, roller coaster, and others - all shone like new.
As I entered, Amelia Garcia and a few other girls were gathered around a machine, with Emily Turner among them.
I had assumed Turner's striking looks had attracted admirers, but on closer inspection, I found her diligently making cotton candy for those waiting.
"Jack Harper, do you want one?" she asked with a smile, offering me a blue cotton candy from a distance. Amelia Garcia hurried over with it, saying, "It's really sweet! This was supposed to be mine, but I'm giving it to you. Aren't I nice?"
I couldn't help but smile, taking a bite. It melted instantly, deliciously smooth and sweet.
Looking from the dark expanse beyond to the bright, bustling area around me, I sighed, "Yes, it's very sweet."
It felt like the calm before a storm, a tacit peace before the game began with everyone present.
Then, suddenly, I heard heavy footsteps approaching.
Turning around, I saw a large mascot bear clumsily descending from a tower. Its fuzzy ears and hands moved awkwardly but endearingly.
As it approached, it kept repeating, "Happy! Happy! Are you happy?!"
Amelia Garcia's eyes lit up, eager to touch it, but I cautiously held her back.
The bear reached us, still repeating its phrase and performing a curtsy.
But as it stood up again, something terrible happened - the adorable bear's massive head fell off, and blood gushed from its body.
The blood-soaked head rolled to a stop less than a meter from us, still repeating, "Happy! Happy! Are you happy?"
Its dark eyes fixed on us, the voice now lower, eerily asking, "My dear, are you happy?"
