Chapter 1

I jolted awake, my heart racing, to the unsettling silence of my dimly lit apartment. The only light came from the streetlamp outside, casting long shadows across the room. An eerie feeling crept over me as I noticed my apartment door ajar, a sliver of darkness peering through the gap.

Who am I? Why am I here? What's going on? I thought, my mind grappling with the surreal situation.

As I rose to investigate, a voice, devoid of warmth and seemingly coming from nowhere and everywhere, enveloped the room. "Welcome to AI GAMES. You have one choice to make: to play or to perish in ignorance."

What kind of sick joke is this? My pulse quickened, a mix of fear and disbelief washing over me.

Turning towards the door, I planned to leave, but the hallway outside my apartment had changed. It was a long, dimly lit tunnel, its end lost in darkness.

I stumbled back, my mind racing. This can't be real. It's got to be some sort of nightmare.

"Ding," the voice chimed, chillingly calm. "You have 20 seconds left to decide whether to start the AI game. Your time in this reality is ending."

Reality? This? Panic surged within me as I struggled to make sense of the situation.

What is this game?

His mind raced, his identity and past a blank.

"Ten seconds."

I glanced around frantically, looking for anything familiar, anything real. But my apartment seemed to be fading, the walls blurring into the encroaching darkness.

"Nine, eight, seven..."

Is this really happening? Is there no way out?

"Six, five, four..."

What did I do to deserve this? Where are all the people I know?

"Three, two..."

In a final act of desperation, I shouted into the void, "I'll play your game! Just make it stop!"

"One..."

"Player identity confirmed: Jack Harper."

"Welcome truly, to AI GAMES. "

The reality I knew dissolved completely, and I was plunged into an odyssey that was as much about survival as it was about discovering the very fabric of my being.
